Messi surpassed Pele's single-club goalscorer record by scoring against Valladolid in matchday 15 of the Spanish Championship.
The 33-year-old Argentinian striker set this record in the 65th minute of the match. The goal was 644th in a blaugrana jersey (well, or in Barça's away pink kit, to be more precise). Meanwhile, the legendary Pele has scored only 643 goals for Brazilian Santos.
“When I first started out, I never thought I would break such a record, set by Pele himself” Messi wrote. I can only thank everyone who has helped me over the years: teammates, family, friends and everyone who supports me every day."
The Catalans climbed to the fifth place in the La Liga standings, going behind the leaders - Atlético Madrid - eight points plus a game in reserve for the club from Madrid.
